Program on Safety
(Sep 6, 2008) -- The September club meeting program on High
Voltage Safety was presented by AEP Employees Bill Oles, WB8UAE
and Carl Mani, K7CE.
Bill's program was very informative and included a simulated
demonstration of the extreme hazardous situations that occur with
downed power lines and the danger that exists when working around
high voltage. The program also covered the means by which power
plants deliver electricity to our homes.
Our thanks to both Bill and Carl for taking time to give us
this program. As we approach Fall and antenna projects are on your
agenda, take a moment and remember the valuable lessons and safety
suggestions given during this program.

MARC
Safety Break Time !
(Sep 6, 2008) -- The
MARC will once again participate in a "Safety Break" on
the Northbound Rest Stop along I-77 just North of the Dover exit
the weekend of October 3, 4 & 5th.
Most of the time slots have been filled as of the
September club meeting but several still remain open. This Safety
Break represents one of our main fundraiser for the club and we
depend on all of our members support to make this event a success.
It is very easy to participate requiring only six hours of your
time to staff the Safety Break stand. It also makes a great
husband/wife event ! If you cannot take a time slot, consider
donating some cookies to help out. All items must be individually
bagged and this will also help us out.
If you have not yet signed up for a time slot
please contact President Scott McCamish, N3JJT sign up. Scott can
be reached at scottmccamish@hotmail.com.
Thanks for support your MARC !

QST Covers Emergency Communications
(Aug 24, 2008) -- The
September issue of QST is currently on the news stands and is
their annual Special Emergency Communications Issue.
This issue includes many interesting articles on
ARES operation including how to use APRS to support Emcomm, a
practical update on use of D-Star and a new article covering a new
commercial standard for VHF/UHF digital voice and data
communications.
Even if you are not an ARRL member, this issue is
worth adding to you ARES library.
FAR
Scholarship News
(Jul 21, 2008) -- I always make it a point to review the
ARRL website this time of year to have a look at the winners of
the annual Foundation for Amateur Radio (FAR) Scholarship winners
in hopes of spotting a local callsign. I am very happy to report
one callsign from our own club as the recipient of several
scholarships this year.
Stephen M. Sciarini – KC8IDJ, son of
Mike (WA8MKH) and Carol (KB8IMH) Sciarini was recognized with a
Scholarship sponsored by The QCWA Silent Key Memorial Scholarship
as well as the Robert E. True Memorial Scholarship sponsored by
Mrs Shirley True Banning.
These scholarships will certainly help
defray the tremendous cost of a College education. Congratulations
to Stephen on this fine achievement!
Another
Great MARC Field Day !

with each Field Day and many of which are captured in "Kodiak

from the archive from past Field Days ! Click Here to

Tells Red Cross of Remaining Background Check Policy Concerns
Courtesy of the ARRL
(Jul 3, 2008) -- ARRL
President Joel Harrison, W5ZN, has written to Armond T. Mascelli,
Vice President for Domestic Disaster response for the American Red
Cross (ARC) to identify the ARRL's remaining concerns over the
background check policy for ARC partners. Harrison emphasized that
the commencement of negotiation of a replacement Statement of
Understanding (SOU) between the two organizations
should not be further delayed while these concerns are resolved
and that he looked forward to signing a new SOU once
additional edits to the background check Disclosure Form and
clarifications of the background check Authorization Form are in
place for those radio amateurs who volunteer their service to the
Red Cross. Full

MARC
Assist With MS Walk

(Apr
29, 2008) -- Saturday, April 26th marked the official opening
of the 2008 public service season as members of the MARC again
assisted with the annual Spring MS Walk in Massillon at the
Massillon Recreation Center.
Sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis
Society communications volunteers staffed rest stops and provided
safety and support communications for this years event.
Communications was also maintained between the transfer busses and
the Rec Center.
EComm 1, the clubs Emergency Communications
Trailer was stationed at the Rec Center and provided Net Control
operations for the Walk. Great weather made for a very well
attended Walk with over 600 registrants this year. Local MS Walk
Coordinator Dick Kulick expressed his sincere appreciation to all
of the amateur volunteers for their continued assistance year
after year. Additionally, we would like to thank Canton ARC member
Dale Lamm, NX8J, an adult leader of a Boy Scouts of America
Venturing Crew for his assistance along with several scouts. They
provided great assistance to our communications as well as
assistance to many walkers of the event, especially several in
wheelchairs. The overall event went very well with only a few
needing transport back to the Rec Center.
The following volunteers assisted with this years
MS Walk. Terry Russ - N8ATZ, Jim Farriss - WA8GXM, Don Finley -
W8DEF, Linda Finley - K8MOO, Gary Kline - WC8W, Tom Phelps -
W8TNP, Peggy Phelps - W8PNT, Scott McGill - KC8ZCS, Sarah McGill -
KC8ZCT, Tom Gill - KC8QOD, Igor Nikishin - K8INN, Joe Herrick -
WD8BGW (in his role as radio operator and Captain of the Massillon
Police Department), Scott McCamish - N3JJT, Wade Huthmacher -

A
Bit of Repeater History !
The
clubs 147.18 Repeater is the high profile wide area
coverage repeater in Western Stark county and has been for quite
some time. But it wasn't always so, in fact at one time it was not
even a repeater at all ! Learn about the colorful history of
the repeater thanks to an early issue of the clubs newsletter that
I recently found. Click

You are welcome to join us at our monthly club
meetings held on the first Friday of each month at 8:00 PM
at the Massillon Senior Citizens Center, located at 39 Lincoln
Way West, Massillon, Ohio 44647. We usually monitor the club's
147.18 repeater, give us a call and we'll guide you in !
MARC owns and operates repeaters
in the 2 meter and 70 centimeter bands. Our annual Hamfest
is held at the Massillon Boy's & Girls Club in Massillon. We have a large indoor
hamfest area, as well as ample outdoor parking. The prizes are
some of the best you'll find at any area hamfest and the bargains
are many. As
a club member, not only will you have access to the autopatches
on our 2m and 70 cm repeaters, but you will also receive a monthly
subscription to our newsletter, Feedback.
In each issue you will find published, the minutes of the previous
month's meeting, informative articles, and interesting narratives
by our club members.
The
club owns an emergency response communications
trailer that is stocked with radio equipment and back batteries,
as well as a generator. With little notice, MARC can have an emergency
station on the air, ready to provide any help we can. Our club
station, located at the Senior Center, contains an HF station,
VHF and UHF gear, and a computer system. The station is open to
any club member, during the hours that the center is open. Our
VE Team, headed up by Gary WC8W, gives license
exams quarterly at the Emergency Operations Center located
at the Stark County Sheriff's office. Please check the link for
times and specific dates.
