What is the MARC ?

Since 1927, the Massillon Amateur Radio Club has been a diverse radio hobbyist club that is currently over 80 members strong. Active within our community as well as an ARRL Special Service Club, we are actively involved in many facets of Amateur Radio, including Public Service, Membership, Field Day, Repeaters, Amateur Television (ATV), Skywarn plus many other interests. Learn More....

Ohio Section Manager Joe Phillips, K8QOE  (SK)

(Jun 28, 2009) --  Joe Phillips, K8QOE, who served as ARRL Ohio Section Manager since 1998, passed away suddenly at his home on Saturday, June 20. He was 68. Licensed in 1959 as KN9SYL, Phillips first joined the ARRL Field Organization as an Official Emergency Station (OES) in 1986. He became a Public Information Officer in 1989 and has served as an Official Observer (OO) since 1997. He was elected Ohio Section Manager in 1998.

A graduate of Youngstown University, Phillips had a career as a journalist and a teacher. He edited six separate ham radio newsletters in Cincinnati before becoming Newsletter Editor for the Ohio Area Repeater Council in 1984, a position he held for five years. In 1986, Phillips organized the first Ohio Repeater Directory and in 1992, organized the Ohio Section Ham Radio Newsletter Contest. He authored a weekly ham radio newspaper column in the Sunday edition of the Cincinnati Enquirer called "Ham Call" and hosted a similarly named program for cable television in the Cincinnati area.

In 1994, Phillips was elected to the Greater Cincinnati Amateur Radio Hall of Fame, and in 1995, he was the recipient of the ARRL's McGan Silver Antenna Award. This award is given annually to a League member who demonstrates outstanding public relations success on behalf Amateur Radio at the local, state or national level. Phillips was excited about having his photo on the cover of the May 2009 issue of QST featuring the annual Dayton Hamvention.

"Throughout a 40-year friendship, Joe and I worked closely together on many occasions," said ARRL Great Lakes Division Director Jim Weaver, K8JE. "From his early days of supporting the county ARES/RACES unit and the Ohio Repeater Council, Joe has always provided energetic and effective leadership with a friendly, personal touch. The magnetism of his style of leadership drew the best from others who soon became solid friends, not mere associates."

ARRL Membership and Volunteer Programs Manager Dave Patton, NN1N, remembered Phillips fondly: "If you have been to Dayton you have met and laughed with Joe. He was the master of the Wouff Hong ceremony. His red jacket is the stuff of legend in Ohio. Joe was more than a Section Manager -- he really gave all of himself to ARRL for 20-plus years. With him dies the last paper newsletter sent to section membership. When I answered his phone calls, he announced his call with 'Here's your Ohio Nightmare.' He loved baseball, maybe more than I did. He was a good man, and he is really going to be missed."

First Annual Greater Stark Co Fox Hunt

(Jul 1, 2009) -- Sponsored jointly by the Alliance, Canton & Massillon ARC's the hunt will take place on Saturday, July 11th from 10 AM until 1 PM.

The hunt will begin at the Hog Heaven Restaurant located at 2730 Cleveland Ave NW in Canton where a room has been reserved for lunch 1:30 PM after the hunt has ended for swapping all the tall tales !

The hunt boundaries will be to the North: Everhard Road, South: State Route 30, East: Harmont Avenue, and West: Whipple Road. There will be two foxes running. You will be given the first fox frequency at the beginning of the hunt. You will have to find the fox before you will learn the second fox frequency. There will be two classes, Doppler and Non-Doppler.

Certificates will be awarded to the first place winners in both classes. Each participant receives a ticket for a drawing to be held at the Hog Heaven after the event. 1st Prize will be an Offset Attenuator with 2nd prize a copy of the "Transmitter Hunting: Radio Direction Simplified". Winners must be present to win.

First team to find both foxes is the winner. In the event that no one finds the 2nd fox, then the first team to find the 1st fox will be declared the winner. In the case of a tie, the lowest mileage (measured at the finish line) will be the winner.

Ohio PRB-1 Now Has A Number

OHIO HAMS ARE ASKED TO SUPPORT OHIO HOUSE BILL 212

(Jun 14, 2009) -- The state legislation we have known as Ohio PRB-1 is now known officially as Ohio House Bill No. 212.
Lancaster Republican Representative Gerald Stebelton (05) and Carrollton Democratic Representative Mark Okey (61) put the tower protection bill into the Ohio House hopper officially Tuesday, June 9. Eleven other Ohio Representatives, six Republicans and five Democrats, are officially listed as co-sponsors. The complete list of the Representatives on board supporting amateur radio is at the end of this article.
Ohio State Government Liaison Nick Pittner, K8NAP, is the leader of this effort, with District 7 DEC Steve Katz, N8WL, serving as project manager.
Now the work truly begins, said SGL Nick. "We need to have hams contact the remaining 86 members of the Ohio House to possibly be co-sponsors but at least be supporters of HB No 212," he said. Nick added that we are working toward having the bill be assigned to the Homeland Security Committee.
Beginning Saturday, June 13, when you read this on the Ohio Web Site - www/arrlohio.org - you will find two lists added to the story. These lists will help you find who your representative is - representatives by name and by zip code. (See links below)

Remember when you contact your representative, here are the main points to stress:
(1) Getting as many co-sponsors is the whole ball game. It is the difference between our bill getting cuffed around in committee or, as we wish, move quickly through the committee, and on the main floor.
(2) This is a bipartisan bill, relates to homeland security, and is generally already part of Federal law.
(3) Some 31,000 Ohio hams are watching this process and will appreciate its passage.
(4) Some 25 states have already done this.
(5) It does not cost any money.

How to contact your representatives:
Representatives listed by county
Representatives listed by Zip Code (You will need to select your Zip Code range at the bottom of this page)

Here are the members of the Ohio House of Representatives who are already sponsoring Ohio House bill 212:

Sponsors
Rep. Gerald Stebelton, Lancaster, (05) R
Rep. Mark Okey, Carrolton (61) D
Co-Sponsors
Rep. Richard Adams, Troy (79) R
Rep. Danny Bubp, Winchester (88) R
Rep. John Domenick, Smithfield (96) D
Rep. Cheryl Grossman, Grove City (23) R

Rep. Tom Letson, Warren (64) D
Rep. Todd Snitchler, Uniontown (50) R

Rep. Kenny Yuko, Richmond Hts (07) D

May Club Program

(May 2, 2009) -- The program originally scheduled for May had to be postponed but we were fortunate to have club life member Don Wade, W8DEA who currently works for FEMA back in town for a family visit attend the meeting who caught us all up-to-date on his activities since relocating nearly two years ago.

Now living in Marshal, Texas, Don is kept very busy these days as a FEMA Response Manager. Most recently, Don was active in disaster response during Hurricane Ike providing assistance to those displaced by the hurricane. Don actually holds various positions at FEMA from Communications to managing Recovery Centers which are active around the clock. He also leads a group that does damage assessment when requested by the State. This activity keeps Don on the move all over the Southeastern US.

When he does have some free time, Don is also an active member of the Marshal Texas Amateur Radio Club which supports several repeaters that are used for public service quite often.

It was great to have our short visit with Don during the meeting and we hope to see him again soon. Safe travels Don and keep up the great work you're doning at FEMA !

Annual Massillon MS Walk

(Apr 27, 2009) -- Saturday, April 25th marked the official opening of the 2009 public service season as members of the MARC again assisted with the annual Spring MS Walk in Massillon at the Massillon Recreation Center.

Sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society communications volunteers staffed rest stops and provided safety and support communications for this years event. Communications was also maintained between the transfer busses and the Rec Center.

EComm 1, the clubs Emergency Communications Trailer was stationed at the Rec Center and provided Net Control operations for the Walk. Great weather made for a very well attended Walk with over 600 registrants this year. Local MS Walk Coordinator Dick Kulick expressed his sincere appreciation to all of the amateur volunteers for their continued assistance year after year.  The overall event went very well with only a few needing transport back to the Rec Center.

The following volunteers assisted with this years MS Walk. Terry Russ - N8ATZ, Jim Farriss - WA8GXM, Don Finley - W8DEF, Linda Finley - K8MOO, Tom Gill - KC8QOD, Scott McCamish - N3JJT, Wade Huthmacher - WD8MIU, Mike Palmer - KD8ENV, Rodger Trompower - KA8FTS, Carl Cunnert - AB8CC, Dan Anastis - N8DZM, Jack Wade - N8LCS, Ralph Bugg - K8HSQ and Rex Simmons - NX8G.This event provided 63 Community Service Hours.

MARC Awards Banquet

(Feb 8, 2009) -- The Massillon Amateur Radio Club's Annual Awards Banquet was held on Saturday, January 10th at the Otterbein Methodist Church in Navarre with nearly 60 members and guests attending. A great dinner combined with lots of fellowship concluding with by the presentation of last years service awards honoring members accomplishments made for another great club event. A Bit of Repeater History !

The clubs 147.18 Repeater is the high profile wide area coverage repeater in Western Stark county and has been for quite some time. But it wasn't always so, in fact at one time it was not even a repeater at all !  Learn about the colorful history of the repeater thanks to an early issue of the clubs newsletter that I recently found. The FCC Question Corner

Just exactly when do I have to ID my station ?

Q & A on Station Identification.

Q.  Do I have to give my call sign at the beginning of a contact ?

A.  You only have to ID at the end of the QSO and at least once every 10 minutes during it's course as per Article 97.119(a). There is no requirement to transmit your call at the beginning of a contact but it is customary when calling another station to give your call as part of the exchange so the other station knows who is calling him !

Q.  How often do I have to give the call sign of the station I'm talking to ?

A.  You are not legally required to mention the other amateur's call at all per Article 97.119(a). The only exception is when handling traffic with foreign stations - you must then give the other station's call sign at the end of an exchange of third party traffic per Article 97.115(c).
